Carrie Warkentin, MA, RCC
Registered Clinical Counsellor (B.C.)
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and post-graduate training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and Integrative Body Psychotherapy. For over a decade, I have worked with women and men of all ages, from many different backgrounds.
What all my clients have in common is that they are not satisfied with their lives the way they are, and they are determined to make changes to improve their lives.
I believe that counselling is most effective when:
- You are ready to take responsibility for your own life, health and relationships.
- You have had enough pain – emotional and/or physical – and are ready to let it go for good.
- You are willing to let go of old ways of thinking, behaviours and habits and to try new approaches.
- You are committed to investing time, energy and money in your personal growth to become the best person you can be.
Approach in Therapy
I see therapy as a creative, dynamic process of self-discovery, which involves the therapist and the client working together on the same team. I empower my clients to use the new insights they gain from counselling to make the changes they need to in order to have satisfying, fulfilling lives. . Using this as a foundation, I draw on Integrative Body Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Family Systems Therapy as tools in the therapy session.
I believe that long-lasting change is created when all aspects of our being – mind, body and spirit – are integrated during the healing process. Integrative Body Psychotherapy is a holistic approach which strengthens the connection between our bodies, emotions and our minds. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is also very helpful in showing clients how deeply connected our thinking is to our emotions and our behaviours. When we focus on developing positive, healthy thinking patterns rooted in the truth rather than false beliefs, it results in significant change at all levels of our being. Both approaches have been proven through extensive research to be highly effective, especially with depression and anxiety.
It is also extremely helpful to look at clients in the context of their families of origin so they can use this knowledge in improving their current personal and professional relationships. Family Systems Therapy works with the belief that the experiences we have within our own families growing up shape every other relationship we have today, especially the family we create as adults. When we have a clear understanding of the outside forces that constantly shape who we are and what we do, we can use this insight to help us make major positive changes in our lives.
