Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Do you feel powerless over you obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours?

Do you feel a sense of emptiness inside?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has nothing to do with being crazy!

People with OCD have obsessive ideas, thoughts, impulses or images that feel intrusive and senseless.  These include:

  • The fear you’ll harm yourself or another.
  • Fears of shoplifting or handling sharp objects.
  • Fear something bad will happen to those you love.
  • Running over someone or something while driving.
  • Leaving the lights or stove on, the door unlocked.
  • Concerns about being contaminated by touching door handles, shaking hands.
  • Fears you’ll contaminate others.
  • Perverse, forbidden sexual images.
  • Recurring scenes of violence.
  • Obsessions about hording or saving things.

Compulsions are repetitive and intentional behaviours that are performed in a certain order in response to an obsession which can often help you believe that doing this will help protect you or your loved ones.

Compulsions include:

  • Washing your hands excessively.
  • Rituals in showering, bathing etc.
  • Checking you didn’t harm another or yourself.
  • Check you didn’t make a mistake.
  • Reread or rewrite things.
  • The need to repeat routine activities.
  • Counting compulsions.
  • Ordering or arranging compulsions.
  • Compulsions to hoard or collect things.
  • Need to touch, tap or rub things.
  • Need to clean around you compulsively.
  • Pulling your hair.

Performing rituals can never satisfy you because nothing you do from outside yourself can ever bring you comfort or a sense of self worth.

The key to healing OCD is restoring your connection to your sense

of value and worth as a person.

People with OCD often report feeling like a “fraud”, a “fake” or a” nobody” or that they “are nothing”.  This is a result of mistaken negative beliefs they have about themselves that come from their past.

Healing must address these mistaken beliefs and help you find healthier ways of working with your painful feelings.

Our unique mind/body counselling approach can help you:

  • Turn off negative scary thoughts.
  • Overcome feelings of shame.
  • Learn to trust and depend on others.
  • Find healthy ways to soothe your fears and anxieties.
  • Develop a stronger sense of self worth and self esteem.
