Do Concussions Heal?
Most people with concussions will experience a complete recovery.
Concussions
Mild and severe Traumatic Brain Injury (Concussion and TBI) can cause upsetting changes to your mental health.
You may find that preexisting mental illness worsens after your injury or that new symptoms — such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, anger, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more — arise.
Mental Health = Brain Care
Concussions impact BOTH your brain and your emotions.
To successfully treat Concussions you MUST attend to your physiology as well as your psychology.
How do Concussions affect mental health?
Concussed players reported an increase in anxiety-related symptoms 24 to 48 hours after injury compared with the baseline.
As well as a significant increase in depressive symptoms from the time of their injury through recovery and one month after returning to play.
Counselling for Concussions
At the Alpine Clinic, our Counsellors understand the necessity to consider what happens in your body as well as in your mind.
We provide Counselling that helps address both the way the concussion has raised emotions in the mind and how it affects your brain in order to help you reclaim your sense of self-confidence and well-being.
Many of our clients combine Counselling with Direct Neurofeedback.
Direct Neurofeedback for Concussions
Direct neurofeedback is a brain technology that calms your brain and helps reset your nervous system.
You can think of Counselling as working on your mind, while the Direct Neurofeedback works on your brain.
By sending imperceptible micro-signals, to your brain, Direct Neurofeedback helps to get you out of stuck and frozen patterns of thinking and reacting. It clears brain fog and calms mood swings.

"I have of course recommended family and friends and many have had great results as well."

“My husband was locked in a pattern of anger and frustration that took a hold of his personality after his head injury. Through the Alpine Clinic and Direct Neurofeedback he has regained his personality back and his relationships have significantly improved with me and his teen daughters. He has improved focus and mental abilities. He is no longer stuck in frustration.” SP

The Problem with Concussions and Anxiety!
"It can make you believe some crazy stuff. It can make you worry needlessly about things that haven’t happened yet and maybe never will. It can make you think that someone is mad at you when they really aren’t, or that they don’t care about you when they really do. Anxiety often takes you to the worst-case scenario." Locke Hughes
Post Concussion Syndrome - PCS
Post-concussion syndrome, occurs when concussion symptoms last beyond the expected recovery period after the initial injury. The usual recovery period is weeks to months.
You don't have to lose consciousness to get a concussion or experience persistent post-concussive symptoms. In fact, the risk of developing persistent post-concussive symptoms doesn't appear to be associated with the severity of the initial injury.
Psychological conditions, which are present in about half of people with PCS, may include irritability, anxiety, depression, and a change in personality. Other emotional and behavioral symptoms include restlessness, aggression, and mood swings.
In most people, symptoms occur within the first seven to 10 days and go away within three months. Sometimes, they can persist for a year or more.

“I sleep better, I ‘m not feeling depressed, the constant anxiety has gone, my thoughts don’t spiral.”
“After the first session I felt better for almost 24 hours. Then I felt the familiar surge of anxiety come back and slid back into that dark place I’ve been for many years.”
“After each treatment the negative feelings went away, and are now staying away.”
“I’m only 7 sessions in but there is no way I’ll turn back now.”
“The staff is amazing. Positive, helpful, supportive, friendly. And the Neurofeedback is totally worth it. It’s hard to spend money on your own wellness sometimes but this makes everything better.”
“The only other thing that has helped me like this was 2 weeks in the Peruvian jungle on an Ayahuasca retreat. I’d try this first though :)”
"For me it was one of the best decisions of my life. I was short tempered and used to do lots of self talks and analyzes."
"I have noticed the change of how I was processing and behaving differently after 4th or 5th sessions."
"I have been practicing yoga, meditation and mindfulness techniques for long time. What I have achieved in terms of inner state of peace and calmness with 20 sessions of Direct Neurofeedback equals to few years of constant deep meditation practices."
"The team, Claire and Laura, are amazingly professional, comforting, responsive, caring and honest!"
"I was so skeptical at first, read many articles about it and consulted with few expert friends, it took me a year to decide about taking the sessions and my conclusion: This technology works."

Take the Next Step
Individual counselling is a process through which you would work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore your feelings, beliefs, or behaviour. The process can help you work through challenging circumstances, identify aspects of your life that you would like to change, resolve difficult relationships with others, set personal goals, or work towards a desired change. …. more
Neurofeedback is a drug free therapeutic approach to overcoming anxiety, stress and other performance inhibiting emotions. It provides immediate results, in fewer and shorter sessions with a greater ease of treatment. It is completely natural, painless, effortless, without any side effects and has lasting benefits for those who prefer an alternative to medication, or who wish to try something in addition to or instead of counselling ....more
